Atrium Installation | San Francisco, CA
At GitHub's San Francisco office, a long-overlooked atrium presented a unique opportunity to transform an underutilized void into a powerful expression of the company's identity. Visible from both the highly public all-hands space on the first floor and the more internal workspace above, the atrium for years felt dark, empty, and disconnected from the vibrant energy of GitHub's community. The design team approached this challenge not simply as an aesthetic upgrade, but as a chance to create a unifying, immersive experience that could engage users across multiple levels and vantage points while telling a meaningful story about the platform itself.
The result is Commit to the Future, a suspended, multi-story sculptural installation that activates the full vertical volume of the atrium and redefines how the space is experienced. Inspired by GitHub's contribution graph — a visualization of the millions of individual inputs that power the platform — the installation celebrates the idea that small, incremental actions can collectively drive global innovation. Composed of hundreds of polycarbonate elements, the sculpture captures this dynamic, forming a larger, cohesive whole out of many discrete parts, each representing a single contribution within a vast and ever-evolving system.
As visitors move through the space, the installation shifts and transforms, creating a kinetic visual experience that mirrors the fluid, collaborative nature of coding and open-source development. From one perspective, the composition resolves into the familiar figure of Mona, GitHub's mascot, offering an immediate and recognizable point of connection. From another, it dissolves into an abstract field of data points, emphasizing the scale and diversity of the global community behind the platform. This intentional ambiguity invites movement and exploration, encouraging users to engage with the piece from multiple angles and over time.
At a more intimate level, the installation reveals layers of embedded meaning. Familiar octicons — GitHub's native iconography — are woven throughout the composition, alongside words and phrases contributed by the GitHub community. These subtle details create moments of discovery, transforming the sculpture into an interactive experience that rewards curiosity and repeated viewing. In this way, the artwork reflects not only the structure of the platform, but also its culture of exploration, learning, and shared ownership.
Materiality and lighting play a critical role in bringing the installation to life. Constructed from durable polycarbonate, each element was carefully considered to balance clarity, reflectivity, and light diffusion within the glass-enclosed atrium. Integrated lighting enhances the translucency of the components, producing a soft, ambient glow that shifts throughout the day and intensifies after dark. The interplay of light, reflection, and transparency transforms the sculpture from a static object into an atmospheric presence, one that continuously changes in response to its environment and the movement of people around it.
Beyond visual impact, the installation redefines the atrium as a social and cultural anchor within the workplace. It creates a striking backdrop for events and gatherings, draws visitors into the space, and offers a series of memorable, shareable moments that extend GitHub's brand beyond the office itself. By bridging the public and private zones of the building, it creates a shared experience that resonates with both employees and guests.
Commit to the Future gives physical form to the invisible forces that define GitHub — collaboration, iteration, and collective progress. What was once an overlooked architectural void is now a vibrant, immersive environment that embodies the spirit of the platform and the global community that sustains it.
