Jewish Federations of North America

Headquarters
Washington, D.C. | 20,000 SF

Stepping into the headquarters of the Jewish Federations of North America is like entering an evolving gallery—an immersive environment where workplace and cultural narrative intertwine. Inspired by the concept of An Exhibition, the design creates more than a space—it is a journey through identity, heritage, and purpose.

Users are invited to move through the space as they would a curated exhibit, with each element contributing to a broader narrative. A warm, neutral palette creates the canvas, allowing rich textures, sculptural millwork, and deep jewel-toned furnishings to emerge as visual and tactile focal points. These elements do more than fill the space—they frame the experience, guiding the user through a story told in materials, form, and light.

The client’s vision for the space as a functional office, high-profile events venue, and branded showcase inspired a design balancing flexibility, hospitality, and identity. Furniture plays a central role in layering a sculpture garden experience to realize the overarching concept of An Exhibition. Pieces selected as functional artifacts anchor key spaces, contributing to the creative narrative.

The pre-function lounge and multipurpose room feature telescoping glass walls and an integrated AV system, ensuring an ease of transition between public events, meetings, and receptions. Custom signage inspired by museum wayfinding and artfully rendered materials like faux-chiseled tile, brushstroke wallcoverings, and polished plaster tell the organization’s story with subtle sophistication.

The use of materials as artistic expressions, as well as track and layered lighting, and operable partitions, did not exceed the financial constraints. In addition, meticulous space planning established secure, visible access points and circulation past a bullet-resistant security office and entryway.

Driven by an ambitious timeline and a multifaceted scope, this project exemplifies what is possible through strategic collaboration for high performance. Detailed coordination between the design team, general contractor, MEP consultant, and trusted vendor partners was instrumental in addressing complex site conditions and delivering a seamless solution. With this unified approach, challenges were addressed swiftly and strategically, keeping the project on track and aligned with the client’s vision.

Ultimately, the Jewish Federations of North America headquarters is more than an office. It is a cultural destination that honors history, invites belonging, and communicates the mission of the organization through a layered, tactile, and deeply intentional environment.
