Confidential Law Firm

Palo Alto, CA | 52,000 SF

IA partnered with this prestigious law firm to design a workplace reflective of its culture, autonomy, and leadership. The design concept transitions the firm’s long-time presence in the building to a new chapter defined by independence, forward momentum, and growth.

Inspired by the nearby Pacific coastline, the design draws heavily on the sensory aspects of the ocean. A palette of deep sea blues and greens establishes a strong connection, while fluid, organic forms and curved architectural elements reinforce the idea of movement and transformation. Lighting plays a critical role in supporting this narrative through a predominantly indirect approach and layered sources that create depth, softness, and a sense of immersion.

A sculptural ceiling element at the elevator lobby evokes the experience of looking up toward the surface when underwater, creating a memorable moment at arrival. The reception area’s layered feature walls, integrated textures, and views of the exterior heighten the sense of openness and connection to local. A serpentine wall guides visitors from reception toward the conference suite, subtly directing circulation while reinforcing the fluid design language. Integrated seating and warm wood textures soften the architecture and provide functional gathering space without overwhelming the relatively compact footprint.

The conference center and boardroom further reflect the balance between refinement and restraint. While the boardroom adopts a darker, moodier tone to support focused discussion and decision-making, conference rooms feel lighter and more neutral. Custom built-in elements with textured fabric backdrops add visual interest without detracting from functionality. High-quality furnishings throughout elevate the experience while maintaining consistency with the firm’s professional standards.

The Hub café is a central amenity designed to encourage connection and collaboration across practice groups. Unlike the smaller pantries located on each floor, this space functions as a communal gathering point, featuring a larger kitchen, dining area, and a specialty ceiling that continues the water-inspired motif. By providing a dedicated space for informal interaction, the design supports culture-building and reinforces the importance of shared experience at the workplace.

Overall, the project combines global standards and local identity through meticulous planning and regional inspiration, transforming an existing building occupancy into a reinvented workplace that signals a new era for the client.
